For this renovation project of the upper floor of a triplex built in the ’30s and renovated in the ’80s, interior designer Fredric Clairoux wished for the interior renovation to return this residence located in Mile-End to its original identity while bringing out its more contemporary characteristics.
To address the lack of light typical of the long architecture on the Plateau-Mont-Royal, the renovation allowed the creation of new exterior openings. The home was reconfigured to receive more natural light. Moreover, two other interior issues were identified: a significant lack of storage space in the kitchen and bathroom, which were crowded by equipment and removed all functionality from these two cornerstones of the home.
Renovating and transforming an open space
Drawing inspiration from the precision and rigour of old schools, conservatories, and Nordic designs, Frédric Clairoux selected for the interior design noble materials and designed furnishings using simple lines that will endure the test of time. He also brought in more light by varying light sources. Thanks to the creation of new openings, the kitchen was reoriented toward the rest of the space and was endowed with practical cupboards to make the room functional again while maintaining a streamlined design. A kitchen turned toward the rest of the space is also a design more adapted to Montreal families’ new lifestyles.
The room adjacent to the bathroom was redesigned to house the appliances (washers, dryers, and so on), and the bathroom was returned to its original function. This freed-up space enabled a complete rethinking of the bathroom furnishings and adding a marble piece and wooden partitions in the room. This streamlined interior design and new lighting enabled us to give a second life to this previously cluttered space.
With our residential interior design, Clairoux returned functionality to the residence that had been lacking while maintaining the building’s character and architecture. The space is now completely adapted to its neighborhood and era.
